Mental Health Awareness

This Mental Health Awareness Week, the theme is ACTION. Even small steps towards looking after your mental health can make a meaningful difference.

This month, I want to focus on Mental Health Awareness Week (11th–17th May). This year’s theme is ACTION. While awareness of mental health is important, real change happens when we take action. Even small steps can make a big difference.

Many of us are good at recognising when we feel stressed, overwhelmed or low, but we often put off doing anything about it. Life is busy, and it can feel easier to ‘just carry on’. But looking after our mental health shouldn’t be something we leave until things get worse.

What Action Can Look Like

Taking action doesn’t have to mean making big changes. It can be simple and realistic. For example, it might be taking a proper break during the day, getting outside for some fresh air, or giving yourself permission to switch off in the evening. Small habits like these can help us feel more balanced over time.

It’s also important to remember that action looks different for everyone. What helps one person might not work for someone else, and that’s okay. The key is finding what supports you and making it part of your routine, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day.

Reaching Out

Action can also mean reaching out to others. Checking in with a friend, having an honest conversation, or simply asking someone how they’re really doing can make a huge difference. We don’t need to have all the answers; just listening can be enough.

If you’re struggling, taking action might mean asking for help. This could be speaking to a GP, reaching out to a support service, counselling, or opening up to someone you trust. Asking for help is not a weakness - it’s a positive and important step.

In workplaces and communities, action is about creating spaces where people feel comfortable talking about how they feel, without fear of judgement. Encouraging open conversations and reminding people where they can go for support can help break down stigma.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, the message is simple: don’t just be aware - take action. Start small, be kind to yourself, and remember that even the smallest step forward is still progress.
